Sport & Leisure
Wakefield City centre has a vibrant atmosphere, day and night. Attracting major retailers like Debenhams, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and also plenty of independent outlets, there’s everything a shopper needs without having to travel very far. Evenings in the town centre are just as lively, with plenty of bars and restaurants catering for everyone’s taste in food and drink. In nearby, Horbury you’ll also find a good choice of shops and local businesses, from salons to cafés, along the busy high street.
If you prefer something a little more energetic than shopping and dining, no problem, the local area has enough facilities to satisfy the most active of residents. For golfers, the City of Wakefield Golf Club is right on your doorstep – literally! Choose one of our contemporary homes right on the edge of the course for the best view. If golf isn’t your sport of choice, there are lots of other ways to spend your down time. How about indoor skiing at Xscape? You can also rock climb, see a movie or find a place to eat there too.
Schools & Local Services
As well as a good choice of state and independent schools in Wakefield, there are excellent primary and secondary schools nearby, including some popular church schools and well established high schools within the local area.
Wakefield College has recently undergone a modernisation programme and it offers a good range of subjects at higher and vocational level, plus some degree level courses. Other universities within a short travelling distance are Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Huddersfield and York.
Getting About
Brilliant for commuters, the M1 is close enough to be convenient but not close enough to disturb the peace at ThornesGate. It provides drivers with speedy access to destinations north and south and with the intersection of the M62 just a couple of junctions away, travelling east and west couldn’t be easier too. Wakefield City centre is a short hop away, with both Westgate and Kirkgate rail stations being on mainline routes to London (less than two hours journey time to Kings Cross from Westgate) and only 10 minutes by train into Leeds centre. Regular bus services also run right past ThornesGate towards Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Wakefield.
